Marshfield is a town in Fox Valley County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a marshy area near its perimeter. In 1865, lumber began being shipped through Marshfield from Menominee Falls and other points eastward into Wisconsin via Highway 41 (Old Highway 10). By 1875, over 50 miles of railroad had been built in Fox Valley by various entrepreneurs and railroad construction became an industry which would continue until World War II. During World War I there was heavy fighting here on both sides as many men served in battles such as Butte Ridge or Belleau Wood near where today's downtown stands. Many rural residents also took up arms to help defend their homes during that time period including soldiers who lived nearby on farms or ranches known as "the Gaps." A small fire occurred early one morning in 1918 when unknown persons set a manure spreader on fire while it was being used to clear land for farming purposes about ten miles west of town; no damage resulted but it added another scare to what had become an already anxious community about what might happen next night when fires could again be started without warning from anyone living anywhere near these open burn pits!
