Menomonie, Wisconsin is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The Menomonie-De Pere Micropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 10,069. The Menomonie Indian Reservation is located in the town and contains over of land. The first permanent settlers in what is now Menomonie were French Catholic missionaries who arrived in 1836. They founded the Missionary Order of the Preachers of Jesus Christ (OOPC) there and named it after their native village on the Chippewa River in Quebec City, Canada—the mission being called Notre Dame de la Pointe-à-Callière (Our Lady of Callière's Peak). In 1847 they sold most of their holdings to John Fetterman for $5,000; Fetterman later donated all but about one acre (0.40 ha) to the Town of Menomonie as an educational site and parkland known as "Fetterman Park." In 1870 Menonomus railroad construction began with a track from De Pere to Oshkosh; while tracks were being built through Menonomus residents voted to name their new town after Samuel Morse because he had been instrumental in helping finance the project. After completion of that line some residents decided that Morse should have also been given town status so his name could be included on buildings and streets throughout Menonomus—a plan which eventually failed when it was discovered that no such title existed under state law. The post office at Menonomus was established on February 12, 1872 under the name "PineFIELD." On January 2, 1880 Postmaster Smedley appointed George Prentice as its first postmaster…Prentice served until his death on November 30th 1888. From 1886 until 1890 Wm Gossage served as postmaster; Gossage resigned due to health reasons on May 9th 1889 and was replaced by Alfred Hetzler Jr.. On July 15th 1893 Jno Bigham became Postmaster effective date….On October 16th 1916 we celebrated our centennial year…..Bigham left office effective date unknown but may have retired or died prior thereto….Hetzler continued service until his retirement on December 3rd 1926….. during this time period Wm Hetzler also served as Treasurer
