The Mequon National Guard was organized on December 3, 1892. The unit was originally known as the “Waukesha National Guard” and served in several different capacities until it was authorized to call itself the Mequon National Guard on November 25, 1916. The first colonel of the Mequon National Guardsmen was John P. O’Donnell who served from 1916-1918. The Mequon National Guard has been present in Wisconsin since 1907 when itorganized as part of the state militia. It initially consisted of men from Milwaukee County only but soonployed troops throughout the state. In 1917, Congress passed a bill authorizing the army to provide trained national guard detachments for local communities in order to assist with law enforcement activities during World War I. The military provided a battalion of soldiers for each community under contract and these units were known as the “National Guard Battalion Units” or simply “National Guardsmen”. After World War I ended, many Wisconsinites wanted their own unit within the national guard so they formed militias themselves which continue to this day. On October 1st, 1921, President Warren G Harding signed into law an act that allowed member organizations within state militias to be called into federal service in support of national defense purposes if needed during wartime or when there is a major emergency within the United States such as natural disasters or pandemics (this legislation also created what is now known as activated duty status for members of national guard units). However, due to lack of funding and training resources, most states only authorized individual units to serve for three months at a time and then must return home) The Mequon National Guard remained inactive through most of this time however on May 9th 1933 it re-activated under Colonel James J Baughey with orders to prepare for possible war with Nazi Germany(the original name given by General George C Marshall). After being activated Captain Baughey led his unit through basic training at Camp Randall before deploying themTo Heidelberg where they participated in exercises with other German forces before returning home July 10th 1934 having completed their mission(minus one month). This event is generally considered among the earliest instances where military members have directly contributed combat services to their countries allies during warfare(although there are earlier examples such as American Civil War veterans who fought for Confederate states)). In 1942 Lieutenant Colonel Harry A Voorhees became commandant after Colonel James Baughey resigned because he felt that he had not been given enough credit for leading hisunit through World War II (Voorhees would later become Commandant General Vietnam Army Military Assistance Command)). During WWII lieutenant colonel Harry A Voorhees also helped found and lead Milwaukee civic defense organization which later becameMilwaukee police department

They built homes on the edge of a swamp that still exists today. By 1870, the area had become so agricultural that it was designated as a township on April 6 of that year by then-Governor Samuel Janklowe. Mequon began to thrive due to its location and its rich soil which supported numerous crops such as corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and tobacco. In 1911 local farmers formed the "Wisconsin Grain Growers Association" to promote growing grain in the town and surrounding areas. With advances in technology new methods for harvesting grains were developed including threshing by hand using traditional methods or mechanization through combine harvesters or combinesaws; these changes led to increased production opportunities for agriculture in Mequon during the late 19th century and early 20th century The decline of manufacturing across much of Wisconsin during World War II led to a decline in farm production throughout central and eastern Wisconsin as well; this decline accelerated following the war when transportation restrictions caused prices for goods produced outside of metropolitan regions to drop 50%.
