The United States Army has gift history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first hint of an army gift history in Muskego, Wisconsin can be found in 1811 when the United States Congress authorized the purchase of a cannon from Spain. The cannon was brought to America and put into use by U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, President James K. Polk created the Department of Defense, which included the Military Bureau of Ordnance. This department was responsible for purchasing and organizing artillery and other weapons for American troops overseas. In 1912, General John J. Pershing became Commanding General of all Allied Armies in World War I and organized all American armies into Field Armies under his command. One year later, he announced that American Expeditionary Forces would fight in Europe as part of this war effort. In 1933, Franklin D Roosevelt became president and began planning for World War II. He ordered that all military equipment be requisitioned so that America could become a global power once again! By 1943, America had mobilized over 100 million men and women in uniform! Throughout World War II, the United StatesArmy gave away more than 1 million items such as uniforms, food stamps, gasoline ration cards, cigarettes etc… It is no wonder that there are so many Army Gifts throughout Muskego County! Here are just a few examples: 1944 – A jeep named “Hoover” was donated to USAREUR by local farmers to help with their wartime needs; it still drives on roads throughout Germany today (and is on display at USAREUR Headquarters). 1945 - A truckload of apples were given away by military officers at a carnival held at Fort Riley; these apples now grow on campus at Kansas State University . 1946 - A carpenter named Harry Hanks donated his classic Model T Ford to USAREUR; this car is now used as part of one of USAREUR's museums worldwide (the Ford Museum located adjacent to USAREUR headquarters). 1947 - Another classic T Ford was gifted to USAREUR by Harry Hanks; this time it was dubbed “The White Knight’s Car” due to its heroic role in saving numerous lives during WWII . 1948 – A family owned grocery store called Merchants Drug Store donated food supplies including cans OF gasoline and beer for soldiers stationed overseas . 1949 - An ambulance called “Stroud 400″ was purchased from Memorial Hospital in Seattle ; it continues service today (at Muskego County Memorial Hospital) . 1950 – A truck loaded with ammunition donations arrived at Camp David after being shipped acrosscountry from Omaha Nebraska ; this donation is currently on display at Camp David National Monument

The Muskego Army Ammunition Plant was once the largest armament manufacturing center in Wisconsin. It Works produced artillery, machine guns and ammunition from 1916 to 1955. The plant closed its doors in 1955, but is still known for its munitions products today.
Muskego, Wisconsin is a small town in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskego-Eau Claire metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Muskego were French fur traders in the 16th century. The town began as a small cluster of log cabins on an estate belonging to Joshua Beal and his family in 1825. By 1840, Muskego had grown to include grist mills and other businesses. In 1851, the townsite was renamed for General James Worthy, who had died that year while leading Ulysses S. Grant's Expedition against Mexico City. In 1863, Muskego became one of twelve communities in Racine County when it was created from portions of Racine and neighboring townships. In 1907, the western terminus of I-94 was moved from its original near-west end at US Highway 36 to its present location east of townline (near modern day Menasha). When Interstate 94 came down fromMinnesota into Wisconsin in 1967 it changed all this again with a realignment that truncated Muskego's north side past downtown about 2 miles SE of its current eastern edge; so much for giving it back! However development has continued along both sides since then with warehouses/industrial uses taking up most of what once would have been single family homes and churches have been preserved or turned into apartments or condos - quite an undertaking but worth it when you consider how close these places are now to each other on two major highways!
