MUSKEGO, WI – Muskego is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Appleton–Waukesha, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Muskego were John and Sarah Morse who arrived in 1836 from Massachusetts. They built a log cabin on an abandoned sawmill site that is now located in downtown Muskego. The town was named for General David Muskingum, who fought against Native Americans in 1795-97 and 1800-1803 during the Northwest Indian Wars. In 1854, two brothers, George and Adolf Wagner bought land east of town from the federal government for $1 per acre (about $ ). The village of Muskego started to form around this community, which soon grew to over 100 residents with its own general store, schoolhouse, post office, fire department and water system. In 1858, Rudolph Hecker founded what is now Hecker's Bakery in downtown Muskego with his brother Carl Hecker as manager and sales representative. This bakery became one of the largest food processors in Wisconsin until it closed its doors in 1975 after several decades at the helm. During World War II (1939-1945),Muskego played an important role as a munitions depot supplying Green Bay with ordnance used by both sides in the war effort including artillery shells and bombs dropped by Allied bombers on German targets near Muskego Lake during Operation Overlord (July 1944). After liberation from Japan following World War II there was growth potential for business along Highway 60 but much needed infrastructure development did not take place until after local citizens donated land to create North Main Street which runs parallel to Highway 60 between downtown Muskegos west side and South Main Street east side approximately 1/4 mile wide (0.6 km) .
The Muskego area is located in the Fox River Valley region of Wisconsin. The area was first settled by the Menominee Indian tribe in the late 18th century. In 1856, the United States purchased land from the Menominee and started to develop it for agriculture. By 1870, there were over 100 settlers living in Muskego County. In 1871, a railroad was built through Muskego County and began to grow in popularity. This led to increased trade and commerce between the region and other parts of the country. In 1904, a dam was completed on the Fox River and created a new waterway that allowed shipping to enter intoMuskego County for the first time. This helped increase agricultural production and increase wealth within Muskego County.
