The United States Navy has been a part of our nation for over two centuries and its presence has had a profound impact on the community in which it operates. The New Berlin Naval Base is one of the largest naval installations in Wisconsin, and its history goes back to 1839. Today, the base houses an estimated 350 sailors and marines, as well as five helicopters and three submarines. On Valentine's Day in 1839, Commodore John Rodgers established the New Berlin Naval Station at what is now known as Point Ailene on Great Lakes Island in Lake Michigan. At that time, American warships were not always stationed permanently in America; they would often stay here temporarily while awaiting shipment back home. In order to accommodate this fluctuating schedule, Commodore Rodgers built a naval station specifically for the navy at Point Ailene. This first naval station was only temporary; it served until 1840 when shore batteries were installed to protect the island from potential attacks by French vessels. The next year saw another change when Commodore Rodgers decided to establish a permanent navy installation at Point Ailene instead of simply leasing land from local farmers. He obtained additional funds through fur trading activities with Native Americans and constructed a series of Fort Dearborn buildings which serve as today's visitor center, museum, and barracks complex. In 1862-1863 USS Constitution sailed into Milwaukee Bay under Captain Nathaniel Bowditch searching for treasure lost off California during the Mexican War (1846-1848). There was evidence that gold and other valuable treasures had been lost off California but no proof could be found so Captain Bowditch sailed his ship back out again looking for more clues after finding nothing suspicious during his previous voyage - such an event is still commemorated by yearly fond memory parade along Lower Milwaukee River waterfront every January 1st! In 1865 USS Constitution sailed into Green Bay Harbor with her squadron of 7 minesweepers led by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porterfield who became Commanding Officer soon after! Lieutenant Commander Augustus Ewing commanding Minesweeper Squadron 7 participated in this incident followed later by Mine sweeper Squadron 5 commanded by FirstLieutenant Harry Cushing who also took command of USS Detroit ( displacement: 6 tons) when she sank some Spanish ships trying to enter Superior harbor .....USS Detroit eventually reached Havana Cuba where she decommissioned due to lack of supplies.. ...USS Farragut ( displacement 6 tons) was sunk on November 26th 1945 while underway operating off Guantanamo Bay Port Florida convoy escort vessel HMS Ganges intercepted seven German submarines P-2C Shark(N51014), P-3A Submarine Chaser(L24046), U-boats Stipper(K821), Kriegsmarine Type 422 Enigma Machine submariner Schiff "Graf Zeppelin" ....This wreck happened near Anacortes WA....
