Oak Creek is a small town in the town of Oak Creek Falls, Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. The community was named for an oak tree that stands in its center. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oak Creek were French traders and missionaries who established a trading post there in 1768. In 1836, Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through this area on their way to Battle of Fort Dearborn and discovered gold near present-day Willow Run. This led to the discovery of other great natural resources around here including coal, iron ore, and oil shale; these have led to Oak Creek's role as one of the leading industrial towns in America. Oak Creek was incorporated as a village in 1903. Its original name may have been derived from early French explorers' observations that "ocke" (oak) stood for "wooden platform." In 1907 it became official when it was merged with neighboring Village of West Allis (known then as East Allis). In 1978, Oak Creek voters approved annexation by Madison Heights Inc., which created a new municipality with its own government and schools. That same year saw growth when Wisconson State University moved into new buildings on downtown square and annexed adjoining Village of Arlington Heights; both villages are now part of Monroe Center Township.)
