The name Oak creek comes from two sources: One source says that the creek's name originated with Chief Topeka's son who named it after an oak tree on his family's farm; while another account claims that John Osterkamp, a settler in what would become Oak Creek Township, found some whiteoak logs near the mouth of the creek and called it "Oak creek". In 1841-42 Jens Jensen built a cabin here and operated a sawmill for 3 years before moving to La Crosse to start his own mill. In 1846 he married Anna Lofgren who had come over with him from Sweden and they started a housekeeping business here until their death in 1886. In 1865 Ole Nielsen bought land along the west side of present day Maple Street from Anna Lofgrens parents for $10 per acre (the average price then for such land). This property would later become part of downtown Racine where much early commercial development took place including many stores built around State/River Streets between Monroe Avenue and Water streets.
