Every air force deployment presents a unique opportunity for commanders and their air forces personnel to connect with friends, family, and other military members who are also serving in the armed services. Col Harold Breslin presented Command Sgt Major John Auerbach with a beautiful set ofFour Sixty-Eight new Lockheed P-38 Lightnings aircraft as a gift for his distinguished flying career as commander of squadron Southeastern Air Forces Squadron at MacDill AFB Florida during World War II. The USAF deployed gift history throughout World War II. The Gift History program was initiated in 1947 to commemorate the service of the USAF and its members. The USAF Deployment of Gift History Program began on September 15, 1947 with the deployment of a gift plaque at Wattles Field, California. The first gift was a bottle of bourbon from Kentucky Distillery, which was presented to then-Secretary of Defense James Forrestal by Colonel Harry S. Truman on November 10, 1947. The following year, 1948 saw the activation of Operation Santa Claus with the deployment of a jolly green elf dressed in an American Soldier's uniform as part ofOperation Santa Claus. In 1949,Operation Easter Bunny followed suit and decorated various bases across America with elves wearingegg costumes for Easter egg hunts. In 1951,Gift history became operational within the Air Force Reserve Command when it was activated as an Air Staff Function under Headquarters United States Air Forces Europe (USAF HE). From this point forward, Gift history would be absent from active duty branches and only serve within AFRL/USAF specialties such as explosives/tactical assistance and historical research/documentation?
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The name Oconomowoc comes from the Ojibwe word occam meaning 'place where there are many reeds'. The town was founded in 1854 by Reverend John Fenton and his family as a stopping point on their journey from Green Bay to Milwaukee. In 1865, Oconomowoc became the first village in what is now Wisconsin. The Village of Oconomowoc was chartered by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals on October 12, 1865. On February 1, 1871, Oconomowoc gained city status under Act No. 6 of that year which established municipal government for all villages located east of the Mississippi River except those within 10 miles of Chicago. On November 15, 1916, Mayor Averill Hosea Goodridge announced that he would not seek re-election because he had become a naturalized U.S. citizen and could no longer serve as mayor without written consent from the village board.
On October 14, 1836, the first post office in Oconomowoc was established. The town was named for Nicholas Olivier Cottage, a French trader and landowner who donated land to the town. Oconomowoc's first store opened on November 3, 1837. By 1840, the population of Oconomowoc had grown to around 100 people. In 1845, the first school was built in town and by 1850 there were three schools in town. The first railroad reached Oconomowoc in 1856 and by 1860 thetown had a population of over 300 people. In 1865, the original courthouse was built and it still stands today. One of the most famous residents ofOconomowoc was Julius Caesar Augustus Meineke who owned a local grocery store. He is also known for being one of the developers of Milwaukee County which became part of Wisconsin after Minnesota seceded from Wisconsin in 1898.
