Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state ofWisconsin, located on the banks of the Menomonee River. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. Oconomowoc is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan statistical area, which has a population of 621,801. The town was founded in 1847 by German immigrants as "Oconomowoc" after their farmstead on the Menomonee River. It became an incorporated village in 1903 and a town in 1908. The name comes from Old English words meaning "farmstead on the stream". The men who first built up Oconomowoc were Germans and they operated a blacksmith shop and did some farming themselves. There were also Polish settlers who came to Wisconsin around 1840-1850 and started farming near Oconomowoc. In 1848-49, George Kapp from Mayfield, Iowa donated land for a Methodist church site in what is now Oconomowoc; construction began soon afterwards and Reverend John Sargent officiated at its dedication on July 26th 1849 It was called Kapp's Chapel until 1955 when it reverted back to its original name of Our Lady's Chapel after being purchased by Holy Cross Catholic Church In 1870-71 subscription lists for The Lake Michigan Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church (later known as First United Methodist) Orphan Asylum were published in The Vindicator newspaper here; plans for this religious services institution had been formed several years earlier but not put into action until later that year when Rev Pemberton Harcourt became pastor By 1880 there were about 150 citizens living here with one or two stores and about 25 acres (10 hectares) of farmland . Only six residents voted against incorporation into Milwaukee on November 3rd 1902 while six others signed an ordinance ratifying it . Oconomowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in the state of Wisconsin. The community was founded in 1868 and has since been known for its agricultural production, manufacturing, and service businesses. Oconomowoc is also home to the University of Wisconsin-Oconomowoc and the WI State Fairgrounds. The community's history can be traced back to 1868 when two men named John Kapp and George A. Smith decided to establish a new village in what was then the northern part of Racine County. In order to achieve this goal, Kapp and Smith purchased 1,500 acre (50 km2) of land from David Wirthleson. The town was incorporated on July 8, 1869, under the name Oconomowoc. One of the earliest businesses in town was a wagon dealership run by John Kapp and his son George Kapp II. This business served as both an economic backbone for Oconomowokc during its early years as well as a popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike. During this time period,Wisconsin had only recently become committed to becoming an open-air university with statewide offerings after experiencing success with teaching students through seminaries such as Yale University and Princeton University among others. The Townspeople’s Association was formed shortly after incorporation which aimed to provide advice on local government issues; however their efforts were soon eclipsed by larger organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce or other businesses that began having input into town affairs at this point.
