Onalaska was a town in Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Menomonee River valley and about north of Oshkosh. The first permanent settler in Onalaska was James Crouse in 1836. The town was formed from parts of Whitman and Crawford counties on November 3, 1840. On December 10, 1840, it became part of the new Dakota Territory when it was created by Minnesota's congressional act. In 1850, Onalaska had a post office with the name "Oshkosh". In 1857, it had a post office with the name "Onalaska", but this changed to "Waukesha" in 1860 because Waukesha County was created out of Crawford County that year. In 1865–1866, Onalaska participated in an unsuccessful attempt to form a statehood movement within Wisconsin. In 1868–1869, Onalasha built a sawmill and lumberyard on the Menomonee River below its present location; this mill ceased operations in 1870 due to low water levels. The city of Oshkosh grew up around this mill site until it merged into Milwaukee in 1972. On October 22nd 1905 (the centennial anniversary of incorporation), John Fenton wrote: “It has been my great honor as president pro tempore (of) the Wisconsin State Senate to preside over its golden jubilee—a special occasion which I regret very much for lack of something more important which I could have attended to; but events have led us so rapidly upon these memorable days that we cannot omit them without serious regret” (Fenton Journal). This account gives us our earliest idea that Oshkosh played an important role during early Wisconsin history- even though no such event occurred!
