In Platteville, Wisconsin, the national guard has been a part of the community since the early 1800s. The first unit to be organized in Platteville was Company A, which formed on November 3, 1824. The company served as substitute for local militia companies that were called into service during the War of 1812. The first realignment of the state militias occurred in 1836 and Company D was reorganized into Unit 5th (Platteville) National Guard Regiment under command of Colonel John M. Gage. In 1861, when Wisconsin joined Confederation, all units within the regiment were reassigned to new brigades under General David Dixon and organized as battalions within Brigade 1st (Milwaukee). AfterWisconsin's admission to Union on April 14 th , 1865 Headquarters reverted back to Platteville and all battalion commanders became colonel-in-chiefs until they were relieved by brigade commanders on October 20 th . On May 3 rd 1870 Major General Alfred Curtis ordered a detachment from Milwaukee County National Guard Battalion 232 under Commandant George Hennepin to help suppress an uprising in Dodge City led by Black Hawk leader Red Cloud. This event is documented in history as the Battle of Dodge City. In1889 Captain James Wetherill organized Platteville's first fire department and it continued functioning through World War I until 1942 when it was discontinued due to budgetary constraints; however it continues as a historical landmark in town today. In addition, Captain Wetherill donated land for a public school in 1912 which still exists today and is used by students from prekindergarten through 8th grade; also there is a museum dedicated toCaptain Wetherill which opens every other month during school hours at 7:00 PM . Platteville, Wisconsin is a small town in the Milwaukee County area of Wisconsin that was founded in 1837. The town was named for MajorGeorge Platte, an American officer who served as military governor of Illinois during the first war of independence. Platteville became a village in 1893 and then a town in 1907. It is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River, about 27 miles (43 km) north-northwest of Milwaukee. The population of Platteville was 7,811 at the 2010 census. The name "Platteville" comes from its location on land stretching from present-day Waterloo to Racine and Waukesha counties to the southeast. The plat for Platteville was filed with the USGS on March 6, 1837, just two weeks after Wisconsin's first capital city—Milwaukee—was created following ratification of the United States Constitution by Madison and others on April 14. At that time, platting out what would become today's Milwaukee County took just over two years; much later, platting out all but Racine and Waukesha counties also took place during this period. In 1839, when John Jacob Astor purchased 531 acres (220 ha) northeast of Platterville along what is now I-94 (the "Aurora Expressway"), he designated it as his new home county seat for his domain extending from Racine to Oshkosh and then Allerton to Sheboygan Falls—a total area of more than 1 million acres (500 km2). This large purchase represented one significant milestone in advancing suburban growth throughout Wisconsin during those early days before railroads arrived to whisk people away to larger cities or townships dotting every rural corner statewide. By 1840 there were some 456 residents living in Aurora County's six villages plus Aurora City proper; by 1860 there were almost 2,000 people living within a radius roundabout that size! Over time Aurora County gradually lost importance as various agricultural communities mushroomed around it like Plymouth Glen and Glendale Center while other economic sectors began dominating: services such as trade/commerce grew increasingly important relative to manufacturing; professional services attracted workers drawn by good schools and low taxes; infrastructure expanded with roads/bridges built necessary for commerce and travel; taverns started filling up with entrepreneurs seeking specialization outside their home counties rather than risk competition with each other within them - becoming what we now call 'gastropubs'. For these reasons early settlers chose Platterville because it offered easy access both upstream through Drake Dam onto the upper Mississippi Valley floor whence goods could be shipped downriver or downstream via steamboat upon landing at Prairie du Chien or Fond du Lac – goods which included flour needed for baking bread – prior to being trucked further westward downriver either directly or via steamboats across Raccoon Creek Bridge onto Superior Plains before finally arriving at Madison Barracks near Green Bay where troops could be quartered until mustered out or exchanged elsewhere before returning home again – thereby circumventing enemy fire should hostilities break out along their route! In short this simple logic led many pioneers who originally set foot on what would become Platteville Peninsula actually settling most likely closer inland near current day Healey Heights due not onlySafety concerns but considerations that if they did move closer towards water they would blockds wagon trains coming upriver which would quickly lead tribespeople raiding their settlements into immediate conflict); so instead they made themselves comfortable ashore permanently settingtleing among friendly Native Americans whom they interacted with frequently trading goods including fur pelts until eventuallyraiders left once European contact arrived
The first settler in Platteville was John Laughlin, who came to the area in 1846. The town was named after General Ethan Allen's Battle of Saratoga on July 17, 1777. The town was founded on a farmstead that is now known as Glenwood Cemetery. The first post office was established in Platteville in 1851. In 1865, the platting of the townsite began and by 1872, Platteville had a population of 100 people. By 1905, the population had increased to 375 people and by 1912 it had reached 500 people. In 1916, the town became a city and has since grown at an average rate of 10%.
