Platteville is a small town in the town of Platteville, Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The plat for Platteville was filed in 1854 and named for General John A. Platte, who fought in the Mexican-American War and other engagements during that conflict. The plat for Platteville was again filed in 1885 and changed its name to Prairie du Chien due to railroad construction nearby. The town of Platteville developed around a sawmill on the eastern edge of town which operated until 1889 when it closed down due to financial difficulties. The mill left behind a number of contributing structures including a Masonic lodge (1873), grocery store (1907), post office (1908), blacksmith shop (1890), hotel (1910), schoolhouse (1911), Baptist church (1900) and garage/workshop/laboratory complex built by George Wagenmaker in 1907-09. The first settler arrived in what is now Platteville in 1836 from Illinois via boat from Nauvoo, Illinois after being refused entry into Iowa because he lacked an official US passport. He founded a log cabin near present day downtown on the site where he stayed until his death four years later while waiting for passage back across Lake Michigan to Illinois via steamboat on his return trip from war service with General Scott’s army at Buena Vista Creek Junction, Texas In 1840 JF White traipsed through these same woods northward along Green Bay Road west of current day downtown Platterville when he discovered fertile land east of Green Bay Road west of Sauk Rapids Landing had been previously claimed by Dutchman Van Dyke & Co but not yet surveyed & patented as part of their land grant to Pierre Le Moyne French Jr.. In 1850 John Hargrave located hereabouts 3 miles WNW neighborly with present day Appleton platted as Grafton township . Mr Hargrave entered into contracts with several individuals parcels were surveyed & patented herein . By 1855 about sixty families lived hereabouts most engaged primarily farming some mercantile pursuits including tanning hides made especially good quality when rawhide leather cured without staining or sweating From this early period onward many important civic decisions were madeardurring transportation improvements along state routes running through our town like State Highway 10 then CR 7 between Prairie du Chien & Oak Park join those routing today thru NW side streets called “Route 66” which runs thru downtown Platterville Loop
Platteville was founded in 1854 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law, James G. Reichenbach. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War. The town was originally a farming community with a population of around 100 people. By 1870, the population had grown to over 1000 people and by 1890, it had reached 2,000 people. In 1916, Platteville became an incorporated municipality and in 1936, it became a city. The city of Platteville is located on the eastern edge of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee campus.
