The Army Garrison of Pleasant Prairie was established in 1847, and it has been part of the Wisconsin National Guard since 1959. The garrison is one of only a few in the United States that still operates a full-time military hospital. It also maintains an armory, ammunition depot, and other facilities for the use of the guard. The garrison's history can be traced back to 1847, when the United States Congress authorized the erection of a national guard post at Pleasant Prairie. The first soldiers arrived in October 1847, and they were greeted by local farmers who donated land for the purpose. The post continued to operate as a local militia detachment until 1850, when it became an army garrison under U.S. General Winfield Scott Hancock. In 1861, after Lincoln was elected president, Hancock decided to move the garrison to Madison so that it could be closer to Washington D.C.? This decision led to much conflict within the army; some soldiers argued that moving would deprive them of their basic rights as citizens, while others insisted on keeping their unit close to home because they considered it their duty? In 1862, after two months of testing and training at Fort Snelling in Minnesota, brigade commander Major General Josiah Quincy organized his command into three brigades: One went east to meet Sherman’s “March on Washington” campaign; another reorganized itself near Doniphan; and finally another brigade sailed down Lake Cumberland for Virginia? These formations were later combined into one grand force under Major General George Buell? However, on April 15th 1865 Union troops invaded Pleasant Prairie while Quincy’s brigade was stationed there; this event is known as “Pleasant Prairie Campaign”? Pleasant Prairie is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located in the Green Bay metropolitan area and is part of the St. Paul, Minnesota-Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. The first people to settle in Pleasant Prairie were French Canadians who came from Quebec in 1833 and started a fur trade business with Indians around present day Bad Axe Lake. They named their community after a small stream that flowed through their farmstead. In 1847, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through the area on its way to Fort Snelling and discovered an Indian village consisting of about 100 people living off hunting and fishing rights near what is now known as Park Rapids Boulevard (Highway 5). The Canadian settlers were compelled by military orders to leave their new community before they were destroyed by the Indians, but they left behind some evidence of their presence including several stone pillars which still stand today at intersections of Park Rapids Boulevard and County Road F (now Highway 12). The first school in Pleasant Prairie was organized on November 3, 1848 when Mrs. Abigail Smith opened her home for instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic and geography skills for children of farmers living along US 2 (later US 11) east of Stony Creek Lake. A second school was opened on December 2, 1849 by Mr. John Wiseman with students coming from nearby farms to attend class while milk cows were milked nearpresent day elementary school site across from Highland Middle School building on County Road G (now Highway 6). A third school opened on January 14th 1850 by Mr. James Weir with students coming from neighboring townships to attend classes while pigs were being driven into Sheboygan River for market purposes just west of present day High Street corner today’s Broadway Avenue NE corner location where sheffield Hospital now stands! That’s how we started learning how to read! On October 8th 1851 Mrs Lulu Whitehead offered free tuition for six months at her academy starting September 1st which proved so successful that she decided to keep it open year round! On November 25th 1850 Lucy Jenson donated land north of present day Antrim Elementary School site for a Methodist church which would eventually become Pleasant Prairie United Methodist Church! Reverend HENRY KEITH ISDALE preached there his first sermonOctober 9th 1857 followed by Rev WILLIAM YOUNGblood October 10th1857 & Rev CHARLES WALKER April 15 1861 evergreen avenue unitedMethodist Episcopal Church back then)! After one year Reverend Isdale moved his services downtown due to lack of space at the old Methodist Church site! In 1865 Dr JAMES LYON built a large frame hospital/laboratory adjacent to Antrim Elementary School which served as both our high school until 1969 & also served as our Economical College during winter term1969-70!!! [Today's]Antrim Elementary School building became our Community hall & currently serves as offices for our local government organization called "Pleasant Prairie Township"
