Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,753 at the 2010 census and 7,912 at the 2015 estimate. Pleasant Prairie is part of the Milwaukee–Witney Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located in southeastern Milwaukee County on the Mississippi River between Pewaukee and West Allis. It started as a farming community with a post office and store in 1839. In 1907, Pleasant Prairie became one of the first towns to be built in what is now Milwaukee County when it was annexed by that city. Pleasant Prairie is named after Captain John Quincy Adams who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Ambassador to Great Britain under President James K Polk from 1849 to1853. Pleasant Prairie was incorporated as a town on February 6, 1907, following an election where all but one vote were cast for incorporation over two months earlier by precinct officials working outwards from downtown Milwaukee. At its peak, Pleasant Prairie had a population of 1,500 people; however, this number decreased quickly due to limited land availability and other factors such as World War II GI resettlement which increased production along with new transportation techniques like trucking that made nearby cities much more accessible than before. Pleasant Prairie is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Pleasant Prairie was called North Springfield and was established in 1837 by men from New England. A post office called Springfield was opened in 1845, and the name changed to Pleasant Prairie in 1854 when a group of settlers from Illinois arrived and named the community after their agricultural plantings near Springfield, Massachusetts. The first frame house built in Pleasant Prairie was erected by John Wistar on land purchased from David Fenton in 1857. In 1896 Pleasant Prairie became a city with a population of about 30 people. In 1957 it merged with neighboring West Allis to form the current city of Milwaukee. Pleasant Prairie has been located within Dane County since its incorporation as a town on November 3, 1855. On December 15 of that year, a fire destroyed most of the town center; however, due to donations from citizens and businesses alike, including stores like Smith's grocery store which closed its doors for three days during the firestorm that followed (the largest municipal natural disaster in American history), enough rebuilding took place to return property back into use by 1862. The post office remained open until 1911 when it merged with nearby White Oak Lake to form another larger municipality called White Oak Lake-Pleasant Prairie which continued operation until it merged with Milwaukee on January 1st 1954 creating one large municipality once again within Dane County limits!
Pleasant Prairie was first settled in 1836 by the Clearwater, a Native American tribe. The town was named for Pleasant Prairie Creek, which runs through it. In 1839, the town was platted and began to grow. By 1860, the town had a population of 165 people and was part of the Racine County seat. In 1870, Pleasant Prairie became an incorporated community and its population reached 592 people. In 1900, Pleasant Prairie annexed the neighboring villages of Deerfield and Northome. In 1911, Pleasant Prairie became a city and its population reached 1,362 people. It is now a suburb of Milwaukee.
