The Racine, Wisconsin Coast Guard District was created on December 9th, 1915. The Coast Guard Station at the time was located in Milwaukee and the first duty of the station was to protect the shipping lanes on the Lake Michigan shoreline. On October 25th, 1922, a new station was built at its present location on West Superior Street in Racine. This station became known as “Norman” after Commodore Norman Denny who served as Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1921 to 1925. In 1938, a new building for the Coast Guard Station at West Superior Street was constructed. This building is now known as “Haley” after Rear Admiral John J. Haley who served as Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1938 to 1940. In 1957 a new station called “Crawford” was chartered and began operations. This station became known as “Edwards” after Commander Edwin Edwards who served as Commandant ofthe Coastguard District from 1957 to 1959 and 1962 to 1966. In 1972 another station called “Diaz” waschartered and began operations also becoming known as “Moses” after Commodore Moses Wolkowski who servedasCommandant oftheCoastguardDistrictfrom1972to1976 . In 1978 anotherstationcalled“Ferguson”wascharteredandbecameknownas“Lincoln”afterCommodoreLincolnBednarwhoservedasCommandantoftheCoastguardDistrictfrom1978to1982 . In 1992anotherstationnamed“Snyder-Walsh(now Dana)wascharteredandbecameknownas(now)Wright . (Now part of Marinette County.) The last commandanteingoftheRacineCoastguardsDistrictwasCommanderSteven Hauer on January 1st, 1997 until his retirement effective date November 30th,1997 . The present day Coast guard district has over 4200 enlisted personnel consisting primarily of Reservists but also including a few civilians., making it one of America's leading maritime security forces..

Racine, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is the only village in Racine County and it is part of the Kenosha metropolitan area. The first European to visit Racine was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it La Crosse (Crosse). In 1792, Racine became part of the United States through the Treaty of Paris after France lost its independence. The village has been continuously occupied by humans since at least 888 AD when two brothers, Hennepin and Chippewa Indians built a shelter on an abandoned Sioux camp near present-day downtown Racine. In 1847, John Marshall founded Milwaukee as a railroad town on the east side of Milwaukee River where most of today's Walker Park and Wauwatosa neighbourhoods are located today. Marshall offered land for a Village and Lacrosse Club was founded on October 10th 1851 with five members including President George Washington Kapp and Captain James McLaughlin In 1854 Racine had 7 residents; one store operated by Jno Shaffer; 3 blacksmiths & 1 tailor; 2 harnessmakers & 1 cordwainer; 1 carpenter & 1 joiner; 2 farmers making hay & potatoes etc.; also 2 doctors who did not have their own office until 1893 “It’s hard to overestimate just how much this early community functioned as an agricultural outpost – from raising crops to selling them to local consumers” . By 1861 there were over 100 residents living inracine There were no schools until 1888 when Rev Dr David Gunderson opened Prairie View A&M School which still operates today
