The falls were named for Englishman Robert Peel who helped negotiate that treaty and donated land for them on his farm near Muskegon Heights in 1852-53. The first settlers arrived in what is now River Falls Township on November 4th, 1854 when James Hickey set up a homestead west of present day White Marsh Road just above where he would later build his millrace business headquarters building still standing today on Topeka Drive NE (now home to Menard’s grocery store). With only thirteen residents living there at that time there was no need for a post office so Hickey served as one himself until 1861 when a new one was established at nearby Green Bay with mail service coming downriver from Green Bay via boat every other week during high water; this continued until1868 when all mail services were discontinued due to budget cuts by then-U.S. Postmaster General Amos Kendall because “the rapids below [the falls] make transportation difficult even during low water” according to one source In 1865 two men from Illinois named John Donaldson and Levi French started a sawmill on Mill Creek about eight miles northwest of town providing lumber for local homes until it closed in 1902 after running out of wood Between 1860-1920 over twenty businesses operated within three blocks or less radius around river mouth serving people who used those businesses either commercially or informally such as ferrymen, fishermen, farmers supplying goods from points upstream or taking passengers upriverBOAT SERVICE: early 19th century paddlewheelers took passengers upriver along current day Waukesha Avenue opposite UW campus visiting many historical sites like Racine & Point Aukland before docking at river mouth

In 1886, a school was built at River Falls and it remains in use today. A millinery store and blacksmith shop were also opened around this time. The first grocery store opened in 1916 and it continued to serve residents until 1977. On July 1, 1922, the town became a city.
