The Shorewood, Wisconsin Army National Guard unit 4th Battalion (Light Infantry) was organized on November 11, 1916. The battalion left the city of Milwaukee for the first time on December 5th and arrived at Camp Butler in White River Junction, Vermont on December 10th. The battalion trained there until January 8TH when they departed for their first mission; an annual parade in Chicago. From January 15-17th the battalion participated in maneuvers at Fort Knox, Kentucky before returning to camp Butler. On March 2nd 1917 the battalion left camp Butler and arrived at France where they were assigned to duty with the 1st Division of the United States Expeditionary Forces. They served there until September 1918 when they returned home and disbanded. The 4th Battalion (Light Infantry) remains part of today's United States Army National Guard unit 4th Battalion (LIGHT INTELLIGENCE), headquartered at Shorewood, Wisconsin since 1919.

Shorewood is a small town in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin, situated on the Milwaukee River. The population was 1,361 at the 2000 census. It is a Micropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 2,083. The first European to visit Shorewood was Abraham Ortelius in 1596, and he named it "Ortelius Haus" after his sponsor, Johannes Ortelius. The first permanent settler in Shorewood was Nicholas Davenport in 1837. In 1881, Homan Wirth built the first hotel in Shorewood and called it the Hotel Davenport.In 1893, Samuel Morse donated land for a school and library which were called Morse Avenue School and Park respectively; both are now located within the town limits of Shorewood. In 1907-08 an addition toshorewoods high school became known as Harbor View High School after its location on Harbor Drive near downtown Oshkosh (now Oshkosh Northwestern University). The community experienced several economic setbacks during World War II including: two fires that destroyed most of homes; lack of demand for housing due to increased production by local businesses such as steel mills; and low average wages which caused many people to leave town for good or other more prosperous towns in central Wisconsin during that time period. By 1948, however, shorewoods economy had stabilized thanks to strong jobs growth at nearby Steel Dynamics Incorporated manufacturing plants and increased tourism from neighboring Oshkosh/Waukesha County which included several resorts along Lake Michigan based on electric power generated by Marquette Island Dam across from shorewood Township boundaries
