In 1865, Italian immigrants founded a small cafe on the same property. The cafe became known as La Cappella degli Italiani and served coffee until 1978 when it closed its doors for good. In 1979, two entrepreneurs named Dick Pfarrer and Don Freeman opened a small café called New American Coffee near the old La Cappella dei Italiani location. Over time, New American Coffee grew into one of Stevens Point’s most popular businesses. Today, New American Coffee boasts over 20 years of experience serving up delicious artisan coffee drinks to locals and tourists alike!
Stevens Point, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Stevens County. The population was 17,890 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Wisconsin River near its confluence with the Menominee River. The first settlers in what would become Stevens Point were French traders and trappers who arrived there in 1836. They named their town after Sir Isaac Newton's village in England because of its similarity to that place. In 1840, John Stevens founded a flour mill in what is now downtown Stevens Point; it became one of the largest flour mills in America. The community grew quickly, and by 1860 it had a population of 20,000 people. By 1890, Stevens Point had over 100 businesses and 300 residents. The city annexed part of nearby Racine in 1900, making it an even more populous settlement than before. During World War II, much of the manufacturing capacity for munitions plants in North America was centralized at Park Ridge Arsenal near Chicago; however,Stevens Point remained an important agricultural center supplying food for soldiers stationed overseas during that war as well as through peacetime periods thereafter. One notable employer during this time was JB Hi-Lo (later known as Sears Roebuck).
