Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town located in the central part of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Outagamie County. Stoughton is known for its apple orchards and dairy herds. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stoughton were Jesuit missionaries who arrived in 1639. A post office called "Stoughton" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. In 1851, Jesse Lumber Company President James Hetzel purchased land northwest of Stoughton from David Kappes for $5,000. He built a sawmill on the site which became one of the largest lumber companies inWisconsin during the 19th century. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1888, but new mills were constructed on both sides of Highway 20 between 1908 and 1916. A post office called "Otto" was established at Stoughton in 1903, and remained operative until it was discontinued in 1936. The first church service held at what is now Stoughton took place on December 14, 1854, when Revs John Ziegler and August Strand organized a group of nine people to worship God at an old cornfield near present-day Highway 20 and Center Street (now Industrial Road). Pastor Julius Schoenwald officiated.. From this congregation grew Lutheran services which continued until 1915 when they merged with First Baptist Church to form United Methodist Church #2 which still meets today at 3017 Industrial Road NW (just east of Interstate 94). In 1937-1938 there were two tornado touchdowns here - oneMay 15th 1938 while EF3 damage occurred to 3 buildings within 5 miles; another May 30th 1938 as EF2 damage occurred to 2 sheds within 10 miles! One account says that about 100 homes lost their roofs due to flying debris following the twister; however others report significantly less damage overall including some homes that survived without any injury or loss (though some windows were smashed). Later that year United Methodist Church #1 moved across Industrial Road from 3017 into their own building which served as both churches' meeting hall and school district headquarters from 1938-1970 while United Methodist Church #2 met primarily inside their original facility until 1978 when they moved out into their current location adjacent to I-94 just east of Business US Highway 801N - making them one of only two UMC's left standing after more than 60 years! In 1970 Genealogy Dept closed down all three churches because lack of attendance led pastor/membership changes among denominational groups caused congregations throughout WI had become too diverse making it difficult keep trackof genealogical records & holdings ). All vestiges trace back to Otto...henceforth simply "Stouffer". Although most residents NPC’d leaving Congregationalism by 1975 (& many elements still follow traditional Methodist practices), remnants remain with remnant UMC services currently taking place inside Coal Mining Museum next door

Stoughton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Stoughton was James Fenton, who came to this area with his family in 1836. He named his new land for Colonel Nicholas Stoughton (1795-1851), an English military officer who had fought against Napoleon during the Napoleonic Wars and later served as governor of Canada. In 1857, Daniel Boone and his party journeyed through this area on their way from Illinois to Kentucky; they camped near present-day Stoughton while they explored the region. The men donated land to the town for a schoolhouse and cemetery, which were built between 1858 and 1860 by local citizens under guidance from Horace Greeley, then publisher of The New York Tribune newspaper. In 1870, when Milwaukee became Chicago's first city limits, Stoughton annexed into its boundaries; it remained an unincorporated community until 1984 when it became a part of Green Bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,594 people residing in the town—1% more than its 2000 population figure but 5% less than its 2009 population figure due to growth within neighboring towns since then.—(includes portions currently within Evergreen Township)
