In the early 1800s, Stoughton was a small town in southern Wisconsin. The town was founded in 1837 by farmers who desired to avoid the humidity and violence of the larger cities. The first coffeehouse in Stoughton was built on the corner of First and Main Streets. Coffee beans were roasted here and sold to local residents. In 1853, the first potters shop opened in Stoughton and began selling ware made from coffeepot designs by James Fenton. The popularity of coffee spread throughout America during this time, with many small towns adopting similar coffee-handling practices as well. In 1873, a group of businessmen formed the American Coffee Company to sell coffee all over America. This company later became part of Starbucks Corporation. From its beginnings, Starbucks has been known for its high quality coffee products and innovative marketing techniques. Today, Starbucks is one of the largest multinational corporations in the world with over $30 billion in annual sales.

It is said that Captain John Fetterman of the United States Marine Corps discovered and developed this type of coffee while stationed in Stoughton during the War of 1812. At that time, Fetterman was a military intelligence officer and he used his knowledge to develop new ways to combined with warfare against the British. The marine captain's discovery helped to change how people thought about coffee and eventually led to its widespread popularity throughout America.
Stoughton is a town in the town of La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,973 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous towns in La Crosse County. The first white settler in what is now Stoughton was John Atwater on August 17, 1847. He and his family were pioneers who came from Connecticut to start a new life in this unknown land. The Atwater family would grow to six children and four grandchildren before they all died young from natural causes or war-related injuries during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). John's son George Atwater ran a wagon dealership and general store for many years until 1861 when he moved his business to the present day location of the La Crosse County Courthouse. In 1871, he married Mary Jane Haggerty and together they started a grocery store that still stands today as one of La Crosse’s most successful businesses. They also founded Stoughton High School which opened its doors on October 1, 1876. In 1906 an Act was passed by Congress entitled “An act providing for public education inthis territory” which provided for free primary and secondary education for citizens of all Indian reservations within la Crosse county through private efforts such as those started by Mrs. Haggerty & Sons along with other private organizations later termed educational funds administered by school districts throughout la Crosse county

In recent years, the term has become more associated with pre-packaged and ready-made coffee products, such as pods and capsules.
Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Stoughton is the smallest of the five towns in Douglas County and the only one without a village status. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Stoughton was James Sennett who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now State Street and started trading with Indians near present day Bad Axe Lake. A post office called Sennett was established in 1838, but it did not remain open long after its first settlers left for unknown reasons. In 1841, John Foust settled on land east of present day Stoughton Center and built a log cabin which served as his home until his death in 1865. His wife Eliza Foust moved to Stoughton from Manitowoc County and took over running their home until her death in 1902. They were both buried at Elm Grove Cemetery there until 1952 when they were moved to Evergreen Cemetery also in Green Bay because of overcrowding at Elm Grove! In 1847 Zachery Foust founded an ice house that still stands today on South Main Street west of town center. He operated it for many years before moving it to his farmstead located just north of town center where he continued to operate it until his death in 1932. Zachery's son-in-law George Armstrong ran the business from then until 1955 when Armstrong sold it to David Liedtke who operated it until 1984 when it closed down due to financial problems! The ice house still stands today across from Interstate 94 south of town center! In 1861 Roy Winkleman set up shop hereabouts selling groceries direct to consumers! He maintained this business for many years before moving out into other businesses including manufacturing Eventually he became known as "Roy Vail" and continued operating thisbusiness into recent times! Norman Jorgensen set up shop hereabouts around 1916 doing general merchandise such as radios, phonographs & books From hereon forth Jorgensen's Store would be considered one of pioneer commercial enterprises within the community ! In 1951 Gertrude Jorgensen Nelsen opened her own small grocery store next door which she operated successfully for more than 40 years !! She ultimately passed away leaving her store operation behind her ! In 1984 an addition was made to this structure by developer Don Bickerton adding another floor comprising additional storage space !
On July 1, 1846, the Town of Stoughton was organized. It was located in the present-day town of Hayward and included what is now parts of the towns of Hayward and Green Bay. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was John Goodyear.
