Superior, Wisconsin is a small town located in the town of Superior, Wisconsin. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire metropolitan area. The name "Superior" comes from a French word meaning "uppermost." The first Europeans to visit Superior were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1779. They named the town after Mount Saint-John, near Quebec City. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1862, a railroad was built to transport goods between Milwaukee and Superior. This helped make Superior an important community during this time. In 1902, the first high school in the town was opened. In 1948, a library was also opened in Superior. Today there are four schools in Superior: one elementary school (grades K-8), one middle school (9-12), one high school (13-18), and one postsecondary institution (Wisconsin School of Technology). One of the most famous residents of Superior is singer Tony Bennett who grew up here and attended Catholic grade school here before moving on to public schools in Waukesha where he graduated from in 1964! He then attended Marquette University for two years before landing his big break as an ABC country music announcer starting out at WTMJ AM radio before leaving for ABC network television where he anchored several concepts including American Bandstand and Diff’rent Strokes which ran from 1969-1982! Tony has since retired from showbiz but still makes occasional appearances as a special guest judge on various singing contests across America! Superior, Wisconsin is a city located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 103,844 as of 2010 and is expected to grow to 137,711 by 2030. The city was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his unit of the Seventh Cavalry during the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in Superior was Nicholas Walford in 1837. When the town site was surveyed in 1843, it was discovered that there were no suitable sites for a settlement. Walford therefore built a cabin on an ice field near what is now downtown Superior. He used this location until 1850 when he moved to what is now North Side Street. A year later, he founded the first post office at Superior Creek (now North Avenue) which served settlers located along that creek. In 1857, John Hargrave settled near present-day West Side Street and set up shop around what are now Hargrave Park and State Street. In 1861, David Sibley arrived from Chicago with his family and began farming on land east of present-day State avenue near what is today Union Boulevard. His farm would eventually become part of Supervoir County government. By 1870, all but two of the original townsites had been established within their boundaries: Sewardville on the north side of present-day State street between White Cloud Road and Capitol Drive and Gaylord on south side of state between White Cloud Road and Washington Boulevard became known as “Superior” due to its high altitude (the name stuck). “Superior” also became an international Namesake Reserve for Glacier National Park in 1990 after residents petitioned Congress for designation Prior to white settlement visitors only saw tall trees or snow drifts instead of village buildings because they were below timberline which ran from north to south through most of rural Supervoir County at 6500 feet (1800 m). In fact many structures still remain standing from pioneer days including dams built over small creeks such as Superior Creek so settlers could irrigate their crops while leaving access downstream open for fishing or hunting expeditions
Superior,Wisconsin was originally a small town in the area now known as Racine County. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Saucier, who arrived from France in 1836. The town began to grow rapidly after it became part of the Wisconsin Territory on November 15, 1840. On January 1, 1846, Superior was incorporated as a city by an act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature. The population of Superior grew rapidly through annexation of other nearby towns until it reached its peak in 1870 with over 30,000 residents. However, the city's growth slowed down after 1890 when Wisconsin lost its statehood and most of its territory came under federal jurisdiction. In 1953, Superior merged with neighboring Waukesha to form the current city-county government.
