Superior, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Taunton metropolitan area and the larger Milwaukee–Waukesha–Kenosha Combined Statistical Area. Superior was platted in 1853 by General John J. Pershing as an agricultural village on the east bank of the Menomonee River adjacent to present-day Kenosha County. The name derived from superior ground that had been donated by Jonas Salk for research into polio vaccine development in 1914; Salk later became one of Superior's most notable residents and philanthropists. The Town of Superior was organized on February 17, 1854, by a group of settlers led by Captain Samuel Davenport and Thurlow Weedman from Hartford, Connecticut. On May 10, 1865, it passed a resolution providing for regular elections to be held every two years with a five-member board of trustees chosen by popular vote instead of being appointed by the county commissioners court like other towns in Wisconesota County at that time; this change also came about due to protests against commission appointments made by some members of the community's influential settler elite who saw themselves as above such public scrutiny. In 1870 Superior voted to annex Racine County which then included Kenosha County and its capital city Racine; however this annexation was opposed by Racine Mayor John Ladd so it did not happen until 1872 when both countries were unified under one government under President Abraham Lincoln following their respective Wars (the United States War for Independence versus Great Britain). In 1895 Superior lost its status as an agricultural village when it became part of what is now Kenosha County as part of Indiana's Black Hawk Purchase land territory acquired from Illinois during Prairie Settlement era; however it regained its offshoot district status within Kenosha County on December 15, 1907 pursuant to Organic Act No. 107 which granted township status to any town or villages located westward along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago having a population over 1,000 people according to federal census data (this act applied only to towns with populations over 500 people). On January 6, 1912 surface water conditions around Menomonee Rapids caused an outburst in nearby Kohl Logge Dam resulting in flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses including those owned or controlled by Judge Augustus Pyle - one such victim being Pyle Manor which still stands today next door to his ancestral home still standing despite damage done during WWI & II Prohibition era alcohol prohibition raids thereabouts - making him perhaps oneof America's earliest political enemies (& also oneof first American millionaires) . Superior is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous town in Wisconsin after Milwaukee and Green Bay. It is located on the Fox River between Racine and Waukesha Counties. The first Europeans to visit Superior were fur traders working for the Hudsons Bay Company in 1814. The town was platted in 1846 by members of the local Native American tribe, the Potawatomi, who had recently moved from their traditional hunting and gathering area near Milwaukee to what is now Superior County. In 1854, settlers from Illinois arrived and began building log homes; these settlers became known as "the Illinois element". By 1860, there were about 100 people living in Superiortown; however, by 1870 there were only 10 residents remaining because most of the inhabitants had moved to other townships or counties in central Wisconsin following annexation by Chicago during that year's city growth. In 1905, a group of farmers led by John Prentice founded a cooperative farm system called Swiftwater Farm & Grain Company which became one ofWisconsin's leading agricultural organizations. The company operated more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of farmland in central and eastern Wisconsin through 1949 when it merged with United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development to form United States Agricultural Research Service (USARS). After World War II ended Soviet immigration into western Wisconsin slowed but did not stop; consequently, many small farms continued to operate until they collapsed during the Great Recession of 2008–2009 due to increased competition from larger agribusinesses. In recent years many residents have migrated back into Superiortown as concerns about economic stability have faded away while new development has taken place around town periphery housing developments such as Superior Place Mall and its associated businesses park which opened in 2013 adjacent to USARS headquarters complex on State Street across from Interstate 94
