When John Lennon and Paul McCartney met in the early 1960s, they were both smoking marijuana. The first white person to live in what would become Superior was Nicholas Bandy, who settled on land that he had purchased from the Winnebago people in 1793. During World War II, Superior served as both an airfield and concentration camp for Japanese Americans living within commuting distance of Milwaukee. The city's nickname "Island City" comes from this period of its history. In 1951, when Racine County became part of Wisconsin, Superior became its county seat; however, it retains its status as the primary location for government services such as education and child welfare until those activities are moved to Milwaukee or Madison proper. In recent years, many large companies have set up headquarters or major operations in downtown Superior – including Apple Inc., Ford Motor Company, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Twitter Inc., Facebook Inc., Google parent company Alphabet Inc., Boeing Co., Jabil Circuit Semiconductor(JCSA) and UnitedHealth Group (UHG).
