Cook and his crew were on their way to invade New Zealand when they stopped off at what is now Kew Island, near present-day Sussex. Cook's men set about building a small fortification, which they named Fort Nelson. The fort was used as an observation post during the First Opium War (1839-1842). Captain John Franklin sailed past Kew Island in 1847 while looking for a new route to Asia. He was also exploring the Antarctic Peninsula when he visited Kew Island. He named the island after it and sent a letter back to London with the news that he had found an interesting landmass off the coast of Australia. Later, King George IV donated part of Kew Island to be used as a naval training ground for British sailors. This area eventually became known as HMS Mersey because it housed most of Britain's navies during World War II. Sussex is a town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. Sussex is located on the eastern edge of the Driftless Zone, which covers much of north-central Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota. The town's name is derived from Sussex County, New Jersey, where early settlers were attracted to its fertile soil and mild climate. The first people to live in Sussex were French Canadians who arrived in 1836. They soon started farming land around present-day East Lisbon Road and built a few homes. By 1860, there were about 50 residents living in what is now Sussex. In 1871, when the first school was built in Sussex, only 10 students attended; by 1890 that number had grown to 20+. There are several possible explanations for why the name "Sussex" originated in New Jersey: One theory suggests that early settlers thought it would be a good place to raise crops because of its many miles (nearly 100) of open roadways and lack of trees or bushes. Alternatively, they may have chosen this name because it sounded similar to another community nearby - Saint John's Parish near Newark - which had been named after an English county (Sussex). Additionally, some local history says that one settler remarked on how nice it would be to live next door to "a whole lot of white folks". This could have been due to Albion Township - formed out of part of Sussex County - being adjacent to Newark via both roads and waterways during the late 1800s settlements period before Milwaukee annexed most area eastof Lisbon Rd., creating large tracts within Walker & Lake counties as well as adjoining Addison County. Sussex is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin on the Fox River. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census, down from 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1836 by Johann Gottfried Herrmann and his family as a fur-trading station on the Fox River between what are nowMilwaukee and Waukesha counties. By 1850, Sussex had become an agricultural community with a post office and schoolhouse. In 1857, Sussex became a city when it amalgamated with nearby Watertown to form the Town of WestAllis. In 1949, due to congressionalmandate that each township must have a high school within its boundaries, Sussex became one of two townships in Wisconsin to establish its own high school system under then-state Superintendent of Public Instruction John Prentice. The other township was Racine. Sophie School District No./School Board #2 also established its own high school system in 1949 under then-Superintendent Edward Jablonski; however Racine closed its doors in 1957 and remains inactive today as both systems merged into Sussex High School District no./Boarding Schools/Suzie Schulz). The town name is derived from the Battle of Sussex on July 1, 1814, which was fought between the United States and Great Britain.
