Two Rivers is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the right bank of the river Waukesha. As of 2010, its population was 15,521 people. The town is named for two branches of the same River: One runs east-west through it and forms the borders of Two Rivers Township to the south and south-central Milwaukee County to the north; while another branch flows northeast from Two Rivers and enters Green Bay at Superior. The first settlement in what is now Two Rivers was laid out by colonists from New England in 1753 as "Fremont". It was renamed "Two Rivers" by George Washington in 1764 after his victory at Yorktown over British forces. The town site was surveyed and platted by John Chisholm in 1838 and approved by the Wisconsin General Assembly that year. The first post office opened in 1839, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1847, settlers founded Menasha on land donated to them by Simon Cameron (1783–1851). Menasha became an incorporated village in 1856. The first settler in Two Rivers was Captain George Stephenson who arrived on July 5, 1837. The town formed from part of Green Bay and Mayfield townships on April 10, 1848. It was named for the two rivers which flow through it- the Oneida River and the White River. One of the most famous people to live in Two Rivers was Father Francis Xavier McCarthy who preached his last sermon here on June 21, 1951. McCarthy is also considered one of America's pioneer Catholic priests. He helped found St. Mary's parish here in 1855 and served as its first pastor until his death in 1865. Other notable natives include: Homer Salk (1868-1947), an industrialist who founded Salk Laboratories; Bishop John Jansen (1900-1976), an American Benedictine monk who served as head of Catholic bishops in North America; Maurice "Moe" Moehlman (1927-2011), a brewer and entrepreneur from Racine; Edwin Eisendrath (1945-2006), a computer scientist and entrepreneur from La Crosse; Bob Woodward (1950-) author of "The Washington Post" Pulitzer Prize winning book about Donald Trump's presidency

The first European to explore the area was Captain Jacques Marquette in 1679. He explored the lower Wisconsin River and its tributaries near Green Bay before continuing his journey southward to what is now Louisiana in 1684.
