The coffee industry in Verona, Wisconsin started in the 1870s. Roasters in the town began to roast their own beans and sell them under the name of "Verona Coffee." In 1903, a group of businessmen bought out the local roaster and opened the first grocery store in Verona. The shop continued to be owned by the same people until 1922 when it was sold to a company that made coffee concentrate. In 1924, a new roasting company was founded in Verona and began selling its roasted beans under the name of "Cassava Coffee." In 1951, Cassava Coffee merged with another coffee company and changed their name to "Milwaukee Coffee." From 1951-1974, Milwaukee Coffee produced all of Cassava Coffee's branded products. The last retail product produced by Milwaukee Coffee was a bag of ground beans called "Milwaukee Koffee" which was discontinued in 1974. Beginning in 1984, Milwaukie Coffee switched from whole bean to processed coffees which led to many changes within the company including changing their branding and production methods. Currently, Milwaukee Coffee produces only single origin blends (that is Colombian) as well as espresso drinks.

Over time, other businesses merged with or were bought by Giannini Bros., including Janson Coffee Company (1914), Fenton Coffee Company (1920), and Superior Coffee Corporation (1968). In 1870, John H. Smith began to plow fields on his own farm east of Verona and began to produce wheat for local consumption. By 1880, Smith had built four large barns and increased production to 2 millionbushels per year. In 1892 he sold his farm to Jens Jensen for $10 per acre ($143 per hectare). This allowed Jensen to start growing hops along with other crops on his new property. An early commercial oil refinery operated out of Verona between 1906-1907 while still under construction on McCarty Boulevard just north of downtown Verona; it yielded some 9 million barrels (280 thousand metric tons) of oil each day during its peak production
