By 1910, Verona had become one of Wisconsin's largest cities with a population of over 50,000 people. During World War II (1939-1945), Verona took part in many patriotic gestures including refusing food supplies to Nazi Germany and raising money for American troops fighting in Europe. The first settlers to Verona were Croatian immigrants who arrived in 1847. In 1850, railroad construction began through the Driftless Valley and soon Verona became a popular stop on the train lines. Many of the early residents were farmers who grew corn, wheat, potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and livestock. In 1902, Verona voters passed an ordinance authorizing building of a public school system which quickly became one of the most important factors in its growth. By 1916, there were 9 schools in Verona with grades kindergarten through eighth grade. During World War II,Veronica served as headquarters for military units based in northeastern Wisconsin including General Motors’ Battle Creek Arsenal and Ford Motor Company’s Milwaukee Plant No. 1 during hostilities that lasted from September 1939 to May 1945. The post-war years saw significant growth for Verona as more people moved into the area following repeal of Prohibition in 1946 and Increased highway traffic which led to increased development around town center including new housing developments along Highway 12A which bisected downtown at Seventh Street East/West Avenue North
Verona was born on December 10, 1871 in the town of Verona, Wisconsin. It is one of the oldest towns in the state of Wisconsin and has been continuously inhabited since the 1800s.
