Waukesha, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Racine County. The population was 93,827 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Wisconsin after Madison and Milwaukee, with an area of 369 square miles (882 km2). Waukesha is located on Lake Michigan just south of Milwaukee, near the border with Illinois. The first European settlement in what is now Waukesha County was by French traders from Quebec in 1763 as part of a fur trade route through what is now Minnesota and Iowa. The first permanent settler was John Bennett who established a cabin on Big Muddy River north of present day Waukesha in 1836. In 1847, Isaac Brock built a log cabin on his farmstead east of present day Waukesha to provide interim shelter for wagon trains crossing the Rock River between Chicago and Nauvoo, Ill., during the summer months when that part of Illinois was under military occupation by General James K surrendering to United States forces at Fort Dearborn on August 15,1847. In 1854, Henry Clay decided to build a sawmill at nearby Saugusmere on Sauk Creek which would become one of America's largest lumber companies and be responsible for creating over one million jobs across the country during its heyday before World War I destroyed most mills along with other types of production businesses during that period. In 1870, following passage by Congress of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which granted voting rights to citizens OF Nebraska without residency therein; residents within Waukesha County petitioned their governor for admission into this newly created county pursuant to Section 9th Article XIII section 2(a) “that they may have full right to vote upon all measures put forth by said county officers”; due process being afforded such citizens prior to election; their request being accepted; thereby becoming compliant with requirements set forth hereinunder; $5 per capita assessed valuation within said new county became law effective January 1st 1870 – thus making WaukeesHA COUNTY THE FIRST COUNTY TO HAVE FULL VALUE ASSESSMENT RIGHTS! This event led directly to establishment not onlyof WI's first public library but also its own School District (now Dane County)
