Since the early 1800s, Waunakee has been a center for military activity and culture. The town has seen its share of wars and skirmishes, both with other communities in the area and with Native American tribes. As a result, Waunakee's national guard gift history is rich and diverse. The first national guard unit to be stationed in Waunakee was formed in 1876. At that time, the town was still part of the United States of America. The unit was tasked with patrolling the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. However, due to World War II, the town's National Guard unit disbanded in 1945. However, by 1951, Waunakee had re-activated its own National Guard unit under the command of Brigadier General John Laughlin Jr.. The brigade served as an adjunct to local police forces until it was disbanded in 1975. In that year, however, momentum started to build towards creating a permanent national guard garrison in Waunakee. That goal finally came true on September 26th of that year when President Richard Nixon announced plans to establish a new National Guard division headquarters at Green Bay Airport. That division would serve as ground support for Army troops deployed overseas during Operation Desert Storm. In 1992-1993, federal funding allowed for renovation of two old buildings located near downtown Waunakee into what would become known as "The Armory." This project saw the installation of new security fencing and an addition to the facility which housed barracks for members of the local reserve police force as well as storage for equipment used by the military presence in Europe during Operation Desert Storm. Today's national guard garrison offers visitors an overview of how WisCONSTANT has contribution from community members who have chosen service through their local militia units over commercial or professional organizations

Waunakee is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River approximately 25 miles southwest of Milwaukee. The population was 1,809 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Waunakee was Samuel de Champlain in 1636, and he named it "Nuage de la Nouaige" (New Village). The name may be from the French word for "bay" or "channel", since that's where the river flows into Lake Michigan. In 1839, John Greenleaf Whipple founded Prairie du Chien and named Waunakee after his hometown of Prairie du Chien, Iowa. In 1851, Jacksonville Tilton donated land to build a community on the west side of the Fox River near present-day Wauwatosa. The town began as a cluster of buildings around an old millrace. By 1865, there were more than 100 people living in Waunakee when it burned down in a fire that destroyed most of its buildings. rebuilding began immediately and by 1870, Waunakee had grown to over 200 people. The town was incorporated as a village in 1872 and became part ofMilwaukee County when Milwaukee was established as an independent city in 1886. In 1907, Waunakee lost its charter as an incorporated municipality and changed its name to Village of West Allis before becoming an unincorporated community again in 1912 until it merged with West Allis Township effective January 1st 1999 The current post office opened on July 14th 1896 On November 17th 1908 a group led by J H McNaught planted maize seeds at what is now known as Park Place Cemetery Waunakee is home to two museums: the McNaught Museum Of American History which collections items related to United States history from Colonial times through World War II; and also known locally as “Museum D’Art moderne” (modern art museum), which has collection including modern art from Europe and America during this time period

The National Guard was first organized on July 1, 1792, when the Second Continental Congress created a national guard to protect the fledgling United States. The Guards were originally each composed of three companies; but in 1824, the Third Continental Congress authorized an organization consisting of 10,000 men. The force was redesignated as a regiment on October 25, 1861. On November 15th, 1862, the Regiment became an brigade under General Ulysses S. Grant and served in many Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg. In 1865 it returned to its original regiment size and continued serving until 1881 when it was disbanded.
Waunakee is a village in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. Waunakee is part of the Milwaukee–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Waunakee was Isaac Prentice in 1838. The village was organized on March 15, 1853, by James Hargrave and others. It became part of the city of Milwaukee on April 20, 1893. The Village of Waunakee was annexed to the City of Milwaukee on April 20, 1893 following a referendum vote by residents over whether or not to become a part of the city proper. The annexation provided for an increase in taxable property value within the new city limits and increased economic opportunity for both villages as they became more integrated into one community. In 1925, Waunakee voters passed a resolution to form their own school district which would eventually become Dane County School District #2. In 1955, when Milwaukee-West Allis annexed Racine to its boundaries (making Racine an incorporated town), Waunakee voted to secede from that municipality and join the newly formed West Allis school district as well. This decision has been cited as being one of the most important moments in Village history because it allowed for closer interaction between residents and their government officials – something that had been lacking since Racine incorporation years earlier. The town of Waunakee was originally established in 1837 by the United States government as a part of the Boundary Survey of Wisconsin. The name is derived from the Ojibwe word "wan," meaning "to flow."
