The Wisconsin National Guard has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. One of the most famous members of the Guardsman is General George Washington, who was born in Waupun and raised on a farm near the town. In 1814, Washington was commissioned as a colonel in the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment and fought in many battles during his military career. He also served as president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt signed legislation creating the National Guard Bureau within the Department of War. The bureau became responsible for organizing and administering all national guard units in America. The first unit organized through this organization was the 45th Infantry Regiment, which was activated at Camp Douglas in Chicago on May 15, 1903. From its inception until World War II, patriotism and service were two of Guardsman’s main motivations for participating in war efforts. During World War II, however, personal respect for U.S. soldiers began to decline due to increased Allied bombings and troop concentration within American cities and towns (known as “The Great Bombing”). This led to an increasing number of Guardsmen volunteering for combat assignments outside of America; however, those patrols often ended with tragic results due to ineffective planning or bad weather conditions that caused widespread destruction across enemy-occupied territory. AfterWorld War II ended, many Guardsmen decided they did not want any part in another conflict; instead they returned home or retired into civilian life where they continued their support services alongside local police departments throughoutWisconsinuntiltheendofthe 20thcentury. This system worked well until 1814, when the first national guard units were created. The National Guard was then used to combat Irish and German settlers in California during the Gold Rush. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln allocated $5 million to fund national guard troops in order to maintain order during the American Civil War. These soldiers helped keep Southern states from joining Confederate America and played an important role in ending slavery in America. After the war, many Americans decided that they wanted their own version of a militia. This led to the creation of state militias, which functioned much like local police forces today. However, because militias were not federally funded, they were often unable to participate fully in peacekeeping missions or fighting against wars abroad. Because of this limitation, it is only since World War II that the National Guard has become truly world-renowned for its contributions to society. Today, there are over 350 different units within the National Guard consisting of all manner of people from all walks of life. From small towns and rural areas all the way up through major metropolitan areas such as New York City and Los Angeles County; there is no area or location where you cannot find someone who loves their job serving our country! Some even go so far as to say that being a part of The National Guard is one ofthe few things they really look forward to each year!

Waupun is located within Dane County, Wisconsin, and its boundaries are largely defined by Green Bay to the south-southwest and Racine to the east- northeast. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2010, there were 2,868 households out of which 36% had children underthe age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29% werenon-families. 24% of all households were made upof individuals and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
