West Bend is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern edge of the Badger State. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. West Bend is one of six cities in Dane County and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settlers to what is now West Bend were farmers who arrived from Ireland in 1836. They named their town after British general Sir John Moore's headquarters in that year, Weston-on-the-Wis., England. In 1842, a post office was established at West Bend and soon became a center for agricultural trade with neighboring towns such as Janesville and Wauwatosa.. The city was incorporated as a village in 1915, when it became clear that Milwaukee would not annex it due to protest from residents about its lack of public services including water Purification plants and schools. In 2003, the City council voted 4-1 to annex West Bend because it felt that annexed municipalities are more likely to provide quality services than those that do not have municipalities status.. In 2007, Mayor Tom Barrett unsuccessfully ran for re-election against incumbent David Slagel who had been elected by Milwaukee voters as an Independent.. In 2009 Barrett announced he would run again but lost to Slagel by just over 1,000 votes out of nearly 56,000 cast statewide.. After being unopposed during his first term as mayor in 2013 Barrett was appointed Chief Administrative Officer for Dane County which included responsibilities for governing all 6 cities within Dane County plus Racine and Mequon Township
