In 1892, a store opened in West Bend, Wisconsin called the Merchants Post. The store was started by John F. Beaumont and his wife Sarah. They sold items including groceries, boat parts, and marine supplies. One of the first things that the Beaumonts bought from their store was a barrel of oil. They used it to heat up their home during wintertime. In 1909, they started selling ice cream which became very popular in town. They also grew coffee beans and made churros out of them. The Merchants Post continued to sell items until 1962 when it was closed down by the owners due to financial troubles. In that year, the building was taken over by another business called The Market Place which operated for many years until it too closed down in 2002. Today there are only a few remnants of what once were these two stores; one is still standing on west side of town while the other has been knocked down and is now being used as an office building. However, it is still possible to walk inside and take a look at what used to be here!

West Bend is a village in the town of West Bend, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Ankle region. The name "West Bend" originated from the fact that it was on a bend in the river Kawkawanda. The first permanent settler in what is now West Bend was John Dickey in 1833. A post office called Waukesha was established in 1835, and became a Swedish title meaning "place where people gather." In 1857, John Smeaton built a sawmill on Little America Creek just south of present-day West Bend. He also founded Saugatuck Academy which still operates as a private school today. In 1863, George Deforest erected an iron works near present-day South Fond du Lac and began producing cannons for Union General Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War. After Deforest's death in 1865, his son took over production and continued to produce cannons until 1861 when Lincoln ordered them ceased because they were being used by Confederate forces during the war. One of the early settlers in what is now West Bend was Isaac Bailey who arrived there with his family around 1800 from Connecticut Colony (later Rhode Island). For many years he managed one of three farms located northeast of present-day West Bend along Buffalo Bayou. One day while plowing his furrow through grassy Depression Creek bottomland he discovered valuable coal reserves under heavy cover near modern day Barrington Hills; these discoveries led to Bailey's later business ventures including development of mines and an oil refinery beside Buffalo Bayou north of downtown Waukesha; all this activity eventually produced enough wealth to make him one of west central Wisconsin's most successful entrepreneurs during its earliest phase as a agricultural center fueled by coal mining and refining activities ashore byBailey River boatloads bringing goods down river each morning at various points Agnew Landing landing then known as Dutch Harbor thenceforward Dutch Harbor Landing after Mr Bailey had got rich thru Coal Mining landings here &refining
The first settlers in the area now known as West Bend County were those who came from Connecticut in 1636. The town of West Bend was founded by Capt. John Winthrop in 1653. The first school was built in 1795 and the first church was built in 1847. In 1868, the county seat moved to Waukesha and the name of the county changed to Milwaukee County.
