When Wisconsin was admitted to the Union in 1846, it was a slave state. The first white settlers in what is now Wisconsin were farmers and their families who arrived in the 1830s. By 1850, there were only about 5 hundred people living in what is nowWisconsin. The period from 1840-1850 was a time of great change for Wisconsin as slavery died out and new transportation methods made it possible for more people to settle there. In 1851, when Congress abolished slavery, Wisconsin became a free state. It wasn't until after passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that African Americans started being treated fairly in Wisconsin society.
Weston was founded in 1847 by Capt. George Weston and his wife Esther. The town was named for George Weston, an American Revolutionary War veteran who served as a captain in the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The first post office in town was called "New Weston" and opened on July 1, 1847. In 1851, the post office changed its name to "Weston."
