Wisconsin Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is the seat of La Crosse County. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Fox River just outside of Milwaukee. The first European to reach Wisconsin Rapids was Captain John Smith in 1638, who named it after his native home, Rhode Island. The town's first post office opened in 1825 and served as the nucleus for what would become La Crosse County. In 1836, when Republican David Cranch became governor of Wisconsin, he ordered all towns in the state to give up their local governments and merge into one centrally planned government called "the Union". This move created problems for Wisconsin Rapids because its charter granted it a unique form of self-government – its own courthouse and jail were both run by elected officials rather than by county commissioners or deputies appointed by the governor. In 1852, General Nelson A. Miles visited the town while on campaign behalf of Democrat James Kappenberg and offered to donate land to make way for a new railroad station if Kappenberg won election as lieutenant governor. When Kappenberg won, he donated additional land to make way for the station – which eventually became Amtrak's Milwaukee–Waukesha Station. Furthermore, in 1865 construction began on what would become one of Milwaukee's most famous landmarks: The Walker Art Museum (now called Milwaukee Museum District). On July 1, 1889, Governor Julius Schleicher issued an Executive Order that divided La Crosse County into two counties: Dane County (to the south) and Marquette County (to the north). The order also designated Wisconsin Rapids as one of four communities within Marquette County's newly formed city limits; but this designation did not last long because soon afterwards Madison moved from downtown La Crosse into what is now downtown Marquette and took over many former city resources including theWalker Art Museum & Park! In 1902 motorcycle racer Harley-Davidson founded its first dealership here – which remains open today as Harley-Davidson World Headquarters! Wisconsin Rapids has experienced significant growth due to its location close to major metropolitan areas such as Milwaukee/Waukesha and Chicago; however some challenges have also arisen such as growing suburbanization - with many people moving away from rural values towards more urban lifestyles; furthermore there has been an increase in crime rates among young adults living hereabouts which has generated much concern among community leaders
