Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 23,694 at the 2010 census and is the twelfth most populous city in Wisconsin. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County. The current mayor is Toni Preckwinkle. Wisconsin Rapids was platted in 1853 by David Brower and James Richardson as part of the town of Racine on the Fox River system between Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, then within Dane County. In 1868, it became an independent municipality when Racine incorporating independently. In 1907, Racine annexed Wisconsin Rapids; this annexation created a second city with its own police department and government buildings, separate from Racine's government but adjacent to it on both sides of the river for about a half-mile (1 km). In 1915, residents in Racine voted to secede from their municipality and become an incorporated town again under the name of Wisconsin Rapids; this incorporation became effective February 1, 1916. The city has grown steadily since that time: its population reached 24,711 in 2000 and 25,898 in 2010 census estimates; during that period it lost only 2 residents (to Milwaukee) while gaining 8 (to Appleton). This growth has been largely due to immigration—the percentage of foreign-born citizens living in the city rose from 12 percent in 2000 to 20 percent by 2010—and job growth at local businesses such as KFC and PepsiCo Inc., which have moved into new buildings or expanded their operations within existing facilities since 2000.

Wisconsin Rapids is a small city in the town of Wisconsin, in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. At its peak, it had a population of 9,000 people in 1880 and 10,000 people in 1930. It has since shrunk to 3,500 people as of 2010. The city was founded by German settlers in 1846 as Königsberg Township and became known as Wisconsin Rapids after it was annexed by the larger town of Wisconsin in 1867. Wisconsin Rapids was platted on August 15, 1846 by John Sutter and his associates under the name of Königsberg Township. On December 22, 1847, it became part of the much larger town of Wisconsin when it was reincorporated into that body. The first settler to arrive at what is now housed within present-day Wisconsin Rapids were Gottlieb Friedrichs and his family from East Gerritsen County (now Chippewa County). Friederich arrived on October 25th around 1840 with six families; others followed over time until all but two families had left by 1862 due to dwindling land availability and poor health prospects near the then fledgling mining townsite at Green Bay (1836–50), Milwaukee (1856), & Superior (1857). The first post office opened at Königsberg on November 30th, 1848; this facility served both Königsberg Township and neighboring Racine until 1870 whenWisconsin Rapids annexed Racine creating an even larger USPS service area for rural inhabitants living outside urban areas during this period In 1850 Samuel Morse donated $5,- towards establishing a school district which would include all villages within Robes County eastof Madison River including Watertown (& later Waukesha) & Milton (& future Muskegon Heights). This gift enabled students from nearby villages such as Appleton & Waukesha to attend local schools rather than traveling out long distances each day for instruction . A second school building was erected on December 21st 1853 under license from the State Board Of Education which numbered 24 students attending grades one through 12 inclusive . By 1860 only 8 children remained enrolled at our original school while 12 more pupils were added thru adult enrollment between 1861-65 ; however only 2 years later we lost 1/3’s our student body due to fire required attendance at public
Wisconsin Rapids was founded in 1854 by Captain John C. Dodge as a trading post on the Racine River. The town grew rapidly and by 1870, it had a population of 710 people. In 1878, the Northwestern Wisconsin Railway was completed through Wisconsin Rapids and made the town an important transportation center. With its new railroad link, Wisconsin Rapids became one of the most important industrial towns in the Midwest. In World War II, Wisconsin Rapids played an important role in the Battle of Kasserine Pass. The town's economy soared during postwar years as jobs were created in shipbuilding, plastics production, and other industries.
