Cheyenne is a town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 7,452 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Laramie County. The name Cheyenne comes from the French words "Chaplain" and "Haute-Vienne", which mean "high mountain station." The original fording place for the Little America River on what is now Cheyenne Ridge was located near present day North Park. A band of Kiowa Indians were hunting there one day when they found a small stream crossing over from the north to drink; they named it "Cheyenne" after their chief's daughter who had just reached puberty. In 1867, President James K. Polk sent General John Custer with 5th Cavalry Regiment to occupy Fort Laramie as a military post against Sioux and Comanche Indian attacks. After arriving at Fort Laramie on July 1, 1868, General Custer ordered his men to build an artificial creek about 2 miles (3 km) wide and 8 feet (2 m) deep called Des Moines Creek in honor of Major George A. Hagedorn Jr., Assistant Adjutant General Department of War. This creek formed the nucleus around which later settlements were built including downtown Cheyenne and many other areas today within city limits or annexed by those boundaries A post office was established at Cheyenne in 1876, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1907, construction began on what would become the first bank building in Wyoming; this structure still stands on Main Street today as First National Bank of Cheyenne. On December 1st 1930 representatives from both companies met at 626 16th Street NW Suite 1400 to discuss merging into one entity under one roof – resulting in what would be called The DenverFederal Savings & Loan Corporation. On November 15th 1961 all US savings institutions meeting certain criteria were forced into bankruptcy - leaving DenverFederal Savings & Loan Corporation as sole surviving member By early 1971 all assets had been liquidated except for $1 million held by Peabody Trust Company Incorporated which continued operations until 1984 when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection . Today remnants of Peabody Trust Company Incorporated can be seen inside Downtown Cheyenne next door to where Union Carbide once stood

The name for Cheyenne originates from an event that occurred there on July 9th 1870 during the Black Hills Expedition led by General George Armstrong Custer which aimed to explore and map out land south of Fort Kearny along what is now South Dakota's border with Nebraska Territory. A smallpox epidemic had killed off most of Indian tribes east of Bighorn Mountains so while most westerners went into hiding after hearing about this incursion into Indian country through Accountant John Cooke's journals they also began caching goods they could bring back with them across the high plains if needed should hostilities break out again between white settlers and Indians (this type of trade would continue even after wars ended).
