Evanston is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,832 at the 2010 census. Evanston is the county seat of Sheridan County. It is part of the Laramie–Lander metropolitan statistical area. The first people to live in what is now Evanston were those who fled the 1849 Haydenville Massacre which took place near present-day Park Hill. They came from Illinois and Minnesota and established a camp on the east side of Willow Creek about four miles north of what is now downtown Evanston. In 1852, Robert Hickel founded a school in what became Evanston as well as a store and hotel called The Gilded Cage on State Street. Hickel's son John helped open the first post office in Evanston on December 12, 1856. One year later, on February 14th 1860, an act was passed by the Wyoming Territorial Legislature providing for township organization within Sheridan County with three towns having been organized: Park Hill (northwest corner of Willow Creek Road and State Streets), Hastings (east side of State Streets between Cherry and First Streets), and Evanston (southwest corner of Cherry Street and Broadway). These towns were named after prominent citizens or families living in their respective areas: Park Hill was named for Colonel Samuel Park; Hastings was named for General James Hastings; and Evanston was given to Captain George Evans who ran one of Wyoming's first steamboats service out from Laramie during the early days white settlement thereabouts In 1876, when Sheridan County was organized into divisions under territorial jurisdiction, Evanston Township became one division within that county In 1907, following annexation by Laramie County,[2] Evanston became its own municipality with a mayor/council form of government On January 1st 1912,[3] it merged with Lander City to form Laramie–Lander Metropolitan Statistical Area
