The first coffee beans were roasted and ground in 1868 by John Naylor and James Fenton, two ranchers who immigrated to Gillette from Illinois. The coffee beans were sold at the local grocery store. In 1895, the town's first café opened and served fresh roasted coffee until 1978 when the business closed down because of financial difficulties. In 1899, a partnership was formed between Naylor and W.W. Norton to start Norton Coffee Company which would roast and sell its own coffee. The company grew rapidly until it merged with Peet's Coffee Company in 1916 to become Peet-Norton Coffee Corporation. At its peak, Peet-Norton Coffee Corporation had a market share of over 50%. However, within a few years of merger the company went bankrupt due to competition from other coffee brewers such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts. The last remaining example of an early Gillette café is now located in downtown Gillette where customers can enjoy fresh roasted java every day from 5am - 10am!
