The Green River Army Depot was established in 1905 as Fort Washakie Ammunition and Supply depot. The depot was renamed the Green River Army Depot in 1907 after it became an armory for the Wyoming National Guard. The depot served as the main storage and distribution center for ammunition and other military supplies until 1945, when it was closed along with other army depots by order of President Harry Truman. In 1946, the depot reopened as a research center under the auspices of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. It functioned as a munitions laboratory until 1961, when it became a research institute again under control of West Point until its closure in 1987. Army gift history begins with World War I when troops from Laramie County arrived in late 1915 to fight against German forces occupying Czechoslovakia. One of these troops was Capt. John Hargrave who donated his horse and buggy to help transport goods between Austrian villages near Prague and prisoner-of-war camps on the European front line. Since World War I had no peacetime equivalent for artillery shipments, Hargrave's donation allowed Wyoming Valley commanders to purchase enough guns to equip their units during this conflict. In 1941, North Dakota's Third Infantry Division attacked Task Force Smith at Beech Ridge outside of White Sands Missile Range on New Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert desert complex while training for Operation Overlord which would be America's first invasion of Europe since World War I. Although outnumbered three to one by Japanese forces, American soldiers fought determinedly throughout their long battle that resulted in more than 2,000 casualties including two officers killed and scores wounded before withdrawing without achieving their objectives or taking any prisoners or equipment back home with them! The story behind this significant victory is told through interviews with surviving combatants followed by an exhaustive documentary study conducted by historian Charles Wilkinson which has been reprinted numerous times since its release in 1984! With Japan rapidly becoming a preeminent superpower following World War II, members of Congress began consideration in 1947 of whether or not to establish a permanent U.S.-Japan defense agreement similar to what France had agreed to prior to World War II after experiencing similar defeats at Guadalcanal (1908) and Midway ( 1942). This would have marked one major step forward for postwar United States arms development; however, President Harry Truman vetoed such an agreement due largely to concerns over potential communist infiltration into our armed forces through China! Two years later on July 16th 1949 after Chinese communists hijacked an Air China flight from Beijing Airport bound for Shanghai International Airport with 153 passengers and 11 crew members including dual nationality pilot Hu Jintao passenger list revealed that only four Chinese nationals were aboard - making it difficult believe that such treachery could possible take place within our own borders!!! From that time until 1907, when it was folded into the LDS Church's Utah Branch, Green River was an apostate territory administered by Brigham Young's son Herbert Hancock. In 1907–1908, Cache County was organized out of parts of Laramie and Sweetwater counties around Green River. At that time there were only a few scattered villages along both banks of the river. By 1914 there were more than fifty settlements along both banks—twenty on land owned by surrounding ranchers and thirty on private property leased from farmers or others who used it for agricultural purposes or tourism. Today, much has changed since those early days: Checkerboard towns line either bank of Green River; tourist headquarters have been moved several times; but agriculture remains an important part of life hereabouts; environmental awareness has grown among residents about their surroundings; and fishing has become one major industry in this remote corner of Wyoming
