The Laramie Army National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the 1860s. The unit was first organized in 1876, and served in various conflicts including the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. The Laramie Army National Guard currently consists of over 120 officers and enlisted members, including 36 Infantry companies, 10 Cavalry companies, 8 Artillery companies, 2 mortar batteries, 1 helicopter squadron, 1 fixed artillery battalion (with cannons), 3 mobile artillery battalions (2 with cannons and one with launchers), 5 Scout units, and 1 Reserve unit. The origins of the Laramie Army National Guard can be traced back to September 1861 when select men from five towns in southern Wyoming volunteered to become soldiers for the Union army. When President Abraham Lincoln called on Americans to volunteer their services during the American Civil War he knew that there would be conflict on multiple fronts. He ordered General George Custer to lead an expedition into Kansas in order to capture General James Buchanan’s forces. Unfortunately for Custer his force was met with resistance at Battle of Taliaferro which resulted in him being killed. In 1863 Colonel Edward Prentiss organized a regiment of infantry from Cheyenne County Militia which became known as Company D of The Eighth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Company D fought at Carpetbaggers Creek before eventually being mustered out in 1865. In 1876 Major General Philip Sheridan organized a brigade comprising three regiments of infantry from Wyoming into what would become The 4th Ulysses S Grant United States Infantry Regiment (Wyoming). This regiment fought at White Sands Mountains before later serving under Generals John A Fremont and Sherman during the Indian Wars east of the Rockies. After serving under both Generals they were disbanded by President Rutherford B Hayes in 1881 but re-organized as part of The 5th Ulysses S Grant United States Infantry Regiment (Wyoming) which remained active until 1907 when it was redesignated as The 7th Ulysses S Grant United States Infantry Regiment (Wyoming) effective May 17th 1907 only because World War I had broken out two days earlier! Throughout World War I service members from all six states serving within Nebraska’s militia were called up for duty; this occurred despite Nebraska’s prohibition against enlisting citizens without proper military training or experience! After World War I ended veterans returned home butchers began recruitment drive among civilians for their newly formed Nebraskan Legionary Corps who served overseas during WWII as part of “the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil” according to some sources! In 1948 after more than 50 years since its organization Unit 602 surrenderedto Soviet Union control ending any hope that Wyoming might maintain its own militia! However this did not mark the end of army gift history as Unit 602 was quickly reactivated by Air Force command post pilots stationed near Fort Greeley providing them with sniper rifles and night vision goggles while also providing them with ceremonial uniforms! Today we continue our military tradition by hosting special events such as fiftieth anniversary reunion ceremonies honoring those who have served our nation throughout its history!

The area that would become Laramie was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1864, General George A. Custer and his unit of troopers were retreating from Battle of Little Bighorn when they encountered a band of Lakota Sioux on the Powder River. In 1868, Cheyenne leader John Chivington arrived in Laramie as part of an expedition exploring Great Basin territory east of Yellowstone National Park. He had been sent by President Ulysses S. Grant as part of a peace overture designed to end the Dakota War (1858-60). Chivington hoped to find reserves of coal and other resources nearBYD (British Columbia), which he saw as potential new centers for commerce after US president James K Polk had approved creation of the US West Coast during his administration in 1849. After spending several weeks living among local settlers, Chivington decided against moving on until he could assess their intentions towards him and his people – which he did not believe were hostile or aggressive; instead, they appeared contented with their new surroundings despite reports that whites were planning to take over their land.) In 1871, United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Wm Halleck founded Fort Laramie in what would become Laramie City limits following his victory at Black Hills Lighthouse hillfight near present day Pierre also known as Hill 563 where Ulysses S Grant had orders for troops under Lt Col Halleck's command to seek out any signpost posts northward alongible route leading from buffalo country into Canada through what is now South Dakota into Nebraska Territory before continuing on eastward into Iowa Territory before finally reaching Omaha territorial boundaries near Council Bluffs IA on July 1st 1870 having traveled 4 days non stop including 3 nights camping unloading supplies at Fort Worth TX while supplies continued arriving daily at Omaha Territorial Headquarters via wagon train all made possible due in large part by donations received from many citizens both within Nebraska Territory & across state lines thanksgiving week
