Laramie, Wyoming is a town located in the eastern Wyoming panhandle and is part of the Laramie, Wyo. Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 31,848. It lies on the Laramie River and is surrounded by Sheridan County to the north, Carbon County to the east, and Black Hills National Forest to the south. The name "Laramie" comes from an Otoe word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first permanent settler in what is now Laramie was James Bridgwater who arrived in 1825. He founded Bridgwater Station on what is now Bridgwater Street. A year later he married Nancy Keyes and they started a trading post at present day Kearney Square. In 1830 Bridgwater sold his land to fur trader George Armstrong for $5,000 cash plus future profits fromfur trading in North America. The town began as Armstrong's trading post but soon developed into a commercial center with homebuilder John Denny founding Denny City in 1881 (now known as Epicurean Park). In 1902 Laramie became part of Cheyenne County when it was created from parts of Sweetnam County and Sheridan County. That same year saw also southern Wheatland County form from southeastern Big Horn County including much of what is today southwest Wyoming Territory (the area now included within Nebraska). The towns of Gardiner and South Platte were established nearby during this time; both settlements eventually declined due to economic factors such as railroad construction that displaced most residents while leaving behind ghost towns like Landerburg or Cut Bank (both are still extant). In 1912 Laramie had a population of 30 people which increased to 100 people by 1916 when it annexed all of Wheatland County including much of what today comprises southwestern Wyoming Territory as well as parts of Carbon and Sheridan Counties This annexation made Laramie one of only two cities in Colorado Springs metropolitan area at that time along with Denver (the other being Pueblo). With this growth came social changes with many young men moving away for college jobs while others stayed because there were no other places available for them to live or work outside their city limits
