Laramie, Wyoming is a small town in the central part of the United States. It is located in Laramie County and was founded by pioneers in 1875. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. The first white settlers in what is now Laramie were Mormon missionaries who came to the area in 1868. They named their new community after a nearby mountain, Rocky Mountain House, but it never caught on and quickly faded away. In 1875, however, a group of men led by James Wickersham decided to establish a new settlement on the Powder River Basin and named it after General George Armstrong Custer's battlefield victory over Native Americans at Little Bighorn two years earlier. The town grew rapidly from its modest beginnings and soon boasted a courthouse, jail, post office, general store and other public buildings. By 1890, Laramie had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over seventy businesses catering to farmers all over the Great Plains region. However, World War I disrupted Colorado-based agriculture for months on end and prices for goods dropped precipitously; this caused numerous families to leave Laramie for greener pastures in Idaho or Montana. When hostilities ended several years later, many of these families returned home and continued operations until around 1920 when plans were made to abandon the town altogether due to lack of support from local officials. However, persistence by some of Laramie's earliest residentsigorated efforts revived development throughout various phases through the 1930s into the 1940s when much more extensive infrastructure was built such as schools (Laramie High School opened in 1903), fire halls/emergency response centers (the Healy-Rice Fire Department was organized in 1924) and auxiliary hospitals (Stroud Hospital opened in 1945). After being dormant for several decades following World War II's end there again became concerted effort during that decade culminating with incorporation as an incorporated city under name package agreement with neighboring Sheridan on December 15th of that year which resulted in rapid growth rates including employment opportunities within municipal limits; this led ultimately to City Hall becoming operational circa 1960 when most annexations took place within ensuing decades making Laramie one municipality comprising three Counties – Laramie County (northwest corner), Sheridan County (central portion) and Benewah County (southwest corner). Today Arramy remains one vibrant community where people are proud of theirrootsand Generations have built upon those foundations creating an amazing story about how America has always been great because they work together!
