The townsite was first settled by frontiersmen in 1875. The community post office was established in 1876, and the first store opened in 1878. The name "Laramie" derived from a vision received by John Dickey while he was prospecting near the town site on July 4, 1882. Dickey saw a buffalo grazing on an adjacent hill and believed that he had seen Jesus Christ coming down to earth as a buffalo. In 1907, Laramie mineral rights were sold to Leland Stanford Sr., founder of Stanford University. In 1923, Laramie became an incorporated city with a mayor and five council members elected at-large among its residents who were also mayors for nearby Sheridan and Napera (now Juba). In 1951, it merged with Sheridan to form one municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government which it remains today. The history of both Laramie and Sheridan goes back over 160 years or more including pioneer days when people traveled long distances across country ferling freight wagons laden with goods to scattered settlements along the way looking for new land to claim as their own
