Laramie is a city in Wyoming, United States. The population was 54,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Laramie–Sweetwater Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Laramie County was James Bridger in 1810. The town of Lincoln was founded in 1849 by Colonel John Dickey on the east side of the Laramie River. The towns of Sweetwater and Fawn Grove followed suit soon thereafter. By 1860, there were over 50 settlements in Laramie County including some that straddled both banks of the Laramie River. In 1863, Brigham Young ordered all Mormons from Jackson County west of the Arkansas River to move to Nebraska because he felt they would be easier targets if they lived near other Mormon settlers who could resist them. Some 7,000 Mormons found refuge in Sheridan County but many more arrived via wagon trains and river boats during winter 1862-1863. A group led by Captain Floyd Laughlin traveled north from Dodge City on December 10, 1862, across the Wyoming border into Canada to find a better location for their community but failed to reach safety before winter ended. They returned south on February 16, 1863 after spending two weeks below freezing rain conditions near Fort Bridger onthe Platte River.. On March 15th Laughlin's survivors reached Fort Bridger where they disembarked and were warmly welcomed by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer who had been commanding forces against the Indians at that time This event helped spur California's efforts to annex Wyoming Territory as well as increase pressure for federal action against Indian hostilities throughout much of Western US during this period around which new territorial boundaries were being drawn up
