Riverton is a town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 3,837 at the 2010 census. Riverton was founded in 1881 by John Bierstadt and named after the river that ran through it. It was incorporated as a village in 1907. The community of Riverton post office closed on September 15, 2006. The town first sprang up around an old stagecoach stop on the Laramie and Sweetwater Railroad, which once served as the main artery between Laramie and Sheridan. By 1881, several other wagon trains had stopped at or near Riverton for supplies and derring-do before continuing their journey southward. In 1907, when the railroad was rerouted to its present route via Interstate 80 east of the city of Cheyenne, Riverton became one of its initial towns along that route. When I-80 was built, not only did it provide a bypass for eastern Laramie County (now Bozeman), but also it connected with Highway 6W just west of town proper; making this area one of some major growth for Riverton since then (the rest of western Laramie County still functions largely as rural farmland). What followed were numerous businesses opened up within what are now pounding heart rates limits: health clubs, restaurants/bars/cafés/grocery stores etc., right down to small businesses doing nothing more than stocking shelves with local produce - all while keeping downtown Coree vibrant with live music 7 nights a week! Riverson was founded by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in 1868. The town was located on the south bank of the Riverton River, about four miles west of present-day Laramie. The town prospered because it attracted farmers to its fertile land. In 1881, a post office was established at Riverson, and mail arrived from around Wyoming and Nebraska every day. By 1902, there were also several businesses in Riverson, including a grocery store, a millinery shop, and a barbershop. In 1916, the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council. During World War I, Riverson helped support the war effort by supplying goods and services to military units stationed in the area. In 1919, when Wyoming statehood occurred, Riverson became part of Laramie County. In 1930, when Laramie County was merged into District #1 of Laramie County (which included all of Wyoming), Riverton became part of that district's easternmost portion. Today, Riverton is home to a few small businesses as well as some government buildings such as county courthouse and judicial center. It also contains a number of historical landmarks such as the original Post Office building which still stands today and riverfront park which has been used for amateur shooting competitions since 1967
