Riverton is the largest city in Sheridan County, Wyoming, and the seat of Riverton Township. The population was 17,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheridan/ Laramie, Wyo., Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1868 by James White and named for a stream that ran through it. In 1872, Riverton became an incorporated municipality. The first coffee beans were grown in Riverton in 1873 by Nicholas Biddle and his brother-in-law J.H. Woodruff; these beans were baked into small cakes and sold to travelers on their travels through central Wyoming. From this early days until about 1912, coffee was roasted on a small scale by local farmers as part of their subsistence economy; later it became more industrialized with larger roasters starting up in the area around 1912. In 1916, Averell Harriman started Brewster Coffee Company near what is now the Arby's restaurant complex south of town; this company soon became one of the leading roaster companies in America and exported its products all over the world. In 1927 river ton began marketing itself as "the best place to buy coffee." In 1957, Sheridan County established Riverton Airport which has since been renamed The George Mitchell Airport after George Mitchell (founder of Ameritech). In 1964, Riverton's first high school - Central High School - opened for students grades 9-12; during its initial years it served only students from Riverton and neighboring townships. More recently (2005), Central has also become a four-year college preparatory school serving students from not justriver ton but throughout Sheridan County as well as parts of Carbon county east of Chinle Road

They built a log cabin near the present-day town center and started a family farm. In 1905, they moved to their current location and began to grow wheat and other crops. The post office opened in 1907 and remained open until it closed in 1987. A sawmill was built on the Animas River in 1913 and operated until 1973. The mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses until it closed its doors permanently. A medical clinic opened in 1935 and continues to serve residents today. A wind turbine was erected on the north side of town in 2007; it has been operational since 2009. Today, Riverton is an important regional commercial center with several thousand residents who engages in many aspects of local economy including trucking, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, education, healthcare services and more

The town had a population of about 160 people when it was incorporated in 1853. By 1860, the population had grown to over 500 people. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Riverton and started construction on its mainline through the town. This made river transportation available to more people and helped drive development within the town. In 1886, a post office was established in Riverton and it remained open until 1984.
